My wife Marian and I moved to North Wales from West Yorkshire in 1979 and have run various businesses from a convenience store to a meat processing and chilled food distribution operation based in Rhyl, to an 18 bedroomed hotel in Llandudno. We have been running Rathlin Country House as a luxury 5 star Bed & Breakfast in Colwyn Bay since 2003.
I have always had a keen interest in photography, although until about 5 years ago it mostly revolved around the family and holidays. I now have more leisure time and am keen to develop my skills which is why I joined Conwy Camera Club in 2008. I like all forms of photography and always like to try new things. I particularly like landscape, wildlife and portraiture.

I was asked to be the photographer at my daughter’s prom night in May 2011. I borrowed lights and a highlight background from fellow CCC member Nick Francis and took over 600 photos on the night. I have never worked so hard for about 3 hours and this has convinced me that event photography is not for me, although I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

This picture is taken from the island (off the west coast of Anglesey) with the Snowdon mountain range in the background. I spend a lot of time walking and recording my images on a web site designed to provide routes for walking in North Wales.

This picture was taken in my own back garden. I like to take photos of wildlife and record as much detail as possible. I am fairly new to bird photography and am working hard to improve my techniques and skills.

We visited my son in Canada in July 2011. He and his wife are working in Calgary. This was where they go skiing in the winter. The runs looked incredibly steep in the Summer but he assured me that when covered with several metres of snow it looked quite different.

This was taken at a practical session with the Creative Special Interest Group in February 2012. It was my first attempt at creative photography using the painted light method.
My camera was mounted on a tripod at about 18 inches above the ground. I used a cable release with an exposure time of 23 seconds. Coloured fairy lights were attached to a bicycle wheel which was slowly rotated. The person rotating the bicycle wheel does not appear on the image because they kept moving during the exposure. This is a fascinating way of producing creative photography and the ideas are limitless.
